***Please note that with track construction underway during the summer we will only be hosting a Middle Distance / Long Distance / Cross Country portion of the training camp. Throws will be back in 2018!***
The thrower is a versatile, powerful athlete. An interpretation and understanding of the different aspects that make up this athlete and how to implement this into individual training will take campers through the week. Two workout sessions a day, a morning and a late afternoon one, will keep camp attendees busy in the rings, getting in the much needed personal attention in the shot put and discuss throughout the week. Track & Field expert sessions will analyze techniques, training schedules, weight lifting, core strength and more.
Over the past two seasons, 10 big west titles have been one in the field events, winning the hammer, shot, discus and javelin at the big west championships. This past season Irene Kujore, a former camp counselor, won all three throws (hammer, shot and discus) to become the first athlete in big west history to pull off the triple crown.

Her season bests of 193’5 hammer, 51’7 shot and 166’4 discus all qualified her for the NCAA West Regional Meet. Derek Masterson took home his second consecutive decathlon championship and upped his personal best to 7,631 at the TGA Invite in Dallas later in June, a school record with the new scoring tables. Masterson, also a talented javelin specialist claimed his third career Big West Championship by winning the javelin with a lifetime best heave of 218’3. Sophomore Albert Hughes took second in the Big West hammer in his first season competing in the event with a 183’2 personal best. Fleming also guided Mitch Haag to a third consecutive Big West win in the high jump. Haag’s personal best of 7’2 ½ puts him second all-time in the UCSB record book.
Showing a wide range of ability, two of Fleming’s throwers would go on to set UCSB records at the 2013 Big West Championship- in the sprints and jumps. Grace Esslinger, a consistent conference placer for the Gaucho women in the javelin had her first healthy collegiate season and would set personal bests of 13.95 in the 100H and a new school record of 11.80 in the 100m. Esslinger also ran on the school record setting 4 x 100m and 4 x 400m relays. Not to be outdone was Veronica Gines a talented hammer/long jumper for the Gauchos. Gines set a new school record in the long jump with a leap of 19’5 ½ at the Big West Championships. That jump came 2 hours after she finished 5th in the women’s hammer throw. She had a season best in the hammer of 169’11.
